Harry is a fully qualified Sports Coaching, Sports Massage and Exercise Therapist graduating from University of Derby Buxton with a 1st class honours degree and he’s currently completing his Strength and Conditioning masters degree at Gloucester University - so he know what he’s talking about!
What is exercise therapy?
Exercise therapy uses physical movements prescribed by a professional with the goal of restoring normal musculoskeletal function, or to reduce pain following an injury or postural problem.
Whether acute or chronic there’s not many injuries that sports massage, combined with carefully prescribed exercises, can’t fix.
Here at Fire & Earth, we focus on using massage to instantly cause muscle changes, for example to reduce tight dense muscle tissue, and to then combine exercise to proactively start to fix what has, or is, causing the injury. The aim is to fix the problem long-term.
A vital part of using exercise is to understand when to start and when to stop/alter the already current movement pattern of the client. Without this careful consideration and even more paramount application, injuries will persist.

What are the benefits of exercise therapy?
Combining sports massage and exercise therapy following an injury is a fantastic way to get back to fitness quickly and to prevent further injuries from happening. There are many benefits including:
- restoring muscle strength
- restoring muscle endurance and power
- improving flexibility and mobility
- proprioception & balance
- help prevent injury
There are three stages of exercise therapy:
- early stage = gentle exercise allowing for the damaged tissue to heal.
- mid stage = progressive loading to the muscles, tendons, bones or ligaments. This develops tensile strength producing a healed tissue that will be able to withstand the stresses and strains of everyday life and exercise.
- late st age = Functional exercises and drills to stress the new tissues to ensure the body is ready for pain free daily movement and exercise.
What to expect at your appointment
There will be an initial consultation and examination, followed by a massage. We will put together a personalised plan for you to complete either on your own or with a therapist. You’ll be shown these functional exercises to complete as your ‘homework’, and these will also be emailed to you. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to continue treatment, check progress and adapt exercises accordingly.
It is really important to understand that injuries will improve and heal more successfully if an exercise plan is followed, however, every person responds differently and healing times will vary. For the therapy to be most successful requires client commitment to continuing the prescribed exercises at home.
