If you’ve ever hobbled up the stairs after a run, or felt that sharp, nagging pull in your knee that just won’t go away, you’ll know how tricky recovery can be. You stretch, you rest, you book yourself in for a massage – and it all helps – but sometimes it feels like your body needs that extra little nudge to get back to its best. Enter the TEND machine.

It’s a brand-new vibration therapy tool that’s designed to target tendons and sore spots in a way our hands simply can’t. We spotted it first at Therapy Expo and it had therapists and athletes crowing round, curious to have a go. Since then, it’s started making its way into more clinics - and into the post-run routines of people like our own Tanya, who’s already a big fan!

Is it just another fitness fad? Or could vibration therapy really change the way we recover from injuries?

What is the TEND machine?

The TEND machine is a vibrational therapy device designed with tendons in mind. Tendon issues are notorious for being stubborn – they niggle, they flare up when you least expect it and they don’t always respond quickly to traditional treatments. The TEND machine uses focused vibration to work deeper than a massage, giving stiff or sore areas a concentrated dose of movement and stimulation.

Unlike foam rollers, massage guns or heat packs, the TEND isn’t about stretching or warming the tissue. Instead, it sends precise vibrations straight into the tendon and surrounding area, encouraging blood flow and easing discomfort.

How does it work?

So, what does it actually feel like? Tanya has been testing it out after her runs. She’s found that the vibration feels much deeper than a massage and that using it regularly has helped ease any discomfort in her knees. That’s the key difference – while a massage therapist works manually on the muscles, the TEND applies a steady, targeted vibration directly to the tendon or joint. It’s like having a tool that can reach into those tricky spots your thumbs just can’t get to. And because it’s purely vibration (with no heat element), it can be used on areas where warming up the tissues might not be the best idea.

What is it used for?

The TEND machine is showing promise in a few areas:

Tendon problems – including Achilles pain, patellar tendon issues (knee pain) and other persistent tendon niggles.
Post-training soreness – that stiffness after a long run, tough gym session or repetitive sports.
Sports recovery – helping athletes and weekend warriors bounce back faster and keep doing what they love.

For anyone who’s had tendon pain, you’ll know how limiting it can feel. Whether it’s your heel grumbling after every run or your knees objecting during squats, the TEND machine gives us a different way to manage discomfort and support recovery.

Is it effective?

The science is still catching up on this one. There are small-scale studies that suggest vibration therapy has benefits for tendon rehab and pain reduction and plenty of therapists are reporting great results in practice. More research will give us a clearer picture but so far, the feedback is promising.

And sometimes it’s the lived experience that says it best. Clients who’ve tried it talk about less stiffness, fewer flare-ups and feeling like that can get back to activity more comfortably. That’s not nothing when you’ve been held back by pain for weeks on end.

How we use it

We don’t bring in new tools for the sake of it. We test them, we listen to the feedback and we make sure that they actually help our clients before they become a part of our toolkit. The TEND machine has ticked those boxes so far and we’re excited to see how it supports people across our clinics.

If you’re curious, or if you’ve been battling tendon pain that won’t quite shift, you’ll soon be able to ask your therapist to try the TEND machine during your session. It might just be the treatment you’ve been waiting for.

The TEND machine is still new on the scene but it’s already making a name for itself in the world of sports recovery and tendon rehab. With its deep vibration therapy, tendon-focused design and positive early feedback, it could be an incredible addition to the way we treat injuries.

Is it the future of injury recovery? Time – and research – will tell. But for now, if it helps you run, train or just move with less pain, that’s a win worth celebrating.

Want to give it a go? Next time you’re in the clinic, ask your therapist about the TEND machine and let’s see if vibration therapy can help speed up your recovery.
