What is manual lymphatic drainage massage?
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle, non-invasive massage technique designed to stimulate your lymphatic system and encourage the natural flow of lymphatic fluid throughout the body.
Whether you're managing a condition such as lymphedema or fibromyalgia, recovering from surgery, or simply looking to support your overall wellbeing, MLD can make a real difference. By improving lymphatic circulation, it helps to reduce swelling, ease discomfort, and give your immune system a natural boost.
How is a MLD different from a normal massage?
While both involve a therapeutic touch, MLD and a traditional massage work in quite different ways, and target very different things.
A regular massage, such as a Swedish or deep-tissue massage, focuses on the muscles and soft tissues. It uses varying levels of pressure to relieve tension, ease aches, and improve circulation. It's brilliant for relaxation, recovery, and general wellbeing.
Manual lymphatic drainage is much gentler. Rather than working into the muscles, it uses very light, rhythmic strokes to stimulate the lymphatic system, the network of vessels and nodes that helps your body remove waste, toxins, and excess fluid. Because the lymphatic vessels sit just beneath the skin, deep pressure would actually be counterproductive.
So while a sports or deep tissue massage might leave you feeling worked on, MLD tends to feel more subtle, but don't let that fool you. The effects can be significant, particularly if you're dealing with swelling, fluid retention, post-surgical recovery, or a condition like lymphedema.

What to expect from an MLD massage
If you've never had MLD before, it's completely natural to have questions. Here's what a typical session looks like, so you can arrive feeling relaxed and ready.
A standard MLD session at Fire & Earth lasts around 90 minutes, though this can be 60 minutes depending on your needs and the area being treated. We'll always discuss this with you beforehand so you know exactly what to expect.
You'll be asked to undress to your underwear, and you'll be covered with towels throughout; only the area being worked on will be exposed at any time. Your comfort and dignity are always our priority.
How many sessions will I need?
This really depends on why you're coming to us. For general wellbeing and stress support, a single session can be wonderfully restorative. For post-surgical recovery, lymphedema, or more complex needs, a course of treatments is usually recommended. We'll talk this through with you at your first appointment and create a plan that works for you.
What are the benefits of an MLD massage?
When most people think of lymphatic drainage, they think of post-surgical recovery or conditions like lymphedema, but MLD has another powerful and often overlooked benefit: its ability to support the body's response to stress and trauma.
The connection between stress and your lymphatic system
When we experience stress or trauma, the body activates its "fight or flight" response, flooding the system with cortisol, our primary stress hormone. In short bursts, cortisol is essential. But when stress becomes chronic, elevated cortisol levels can take a real toll, suppressing the immune system, increasing inflammation, disrupting sleep, and leaving you feeling utterly drained.
This is where MLD can help.
Why gentle works better
Because MLD uses slow, light, rhythmic strokes, it naturally activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the body's "rest and restore" mode. This signals the body to lower its cortisol levels, reduce heart rate, and ease out of a state of stress. Many of our clients find MLD deeply calming, and it's not uncommon to drift off during a session.
Alongside this calming effect, improved lymphatic flow helps the body clear the physical by-products of stress more efficiently, supporting immune function and giving your system the conditions it needs to genuinely recover.
Who can benefit?
MLD can be a wonderful complement to your wellbeing if you're experiencing:
Chronic stress or burnout
Anxiety or nervous system dysregulation
Trauma held in the body
Persistent fatigue or low immunity linked to prolonged stress
At Fire & Earth, we take a whole-body approach to your health, and MLD fits beautifully into that philosophy. Whether you're navigating a difficult period or simply looking to give your nervous system some breathing room, we're here to help.
Please note: while MLD can offer meaningful support, it is not a replacement for professional mental health or trauma therapy. We always encourage a joined-up approach to your care, and are happy to work alongside other practitioners where appropriate.
