Neck Pain Treatment & Relief

Osteopathy, Massage & Posture Support

Neck pain is incredibly common. Especially for people who spend long hours at desks, working on laptops or looking down at their phones. Over time, those positions place significant strain on the cervical spine and the muscles supporting the head and shoulders.

What often starts as mild stiffness or tension, can gradually build into persistent pain, headaches, reduced mobility or even nerve symptoms in the arms.

At Fire & Earth, we treat neck pain using a multidisciplinary approach that focuses on restoring movement and reducing the root cause of irritation. Whether your pain is caused by posture stress, injury or muscular tension, our team combines hands-on treatment with practical rehabilitation to help you move and feel better.

We can treat your neck pain in lots of different ways:

Sports massage to release the tension
Sports therapy for movement assessment and corrective exercise
Osteopathy for joint mobilisation and spinal function

When the neck and upper back start moving properly again, the surrounding muscles can finally relax and the cycle of tension begins to settle.
Common Neck Pain Symptoms
Neck pain can show up in a variety of ways, and it’s often linked with tension through the shoulders and upper back.

Common symptoms include:

Neck stiffness or reduced mobility
Tightness through the upper shoulders or trapezius muscles
Headaches that begin at the base of the skull
Pain when turning or tilting the head
Tingling, numbness, or radiating pain into the arms
Jaw tension or discomfort around the temples
Pain that worsens after desk work or long periods on screens

Many people assume they have ‘slept funny’ or done something minor but what they are usually feeling is the final tipping point after weeks or months of accumulated tension and poor movement patterns.

What Causes Neck Pain

Neck pain rarely comes from a single moment or incident. More often it develops gradually through posture, stress, repetitive movement, or lack of mobility in the surrounding joints.

Tech Neck & Desk Posture

One of the biggest drivers of neck pain today is prolonged screen use.

Looking down at a phone or laptop dramatically increases the load placed on the neck. When the head moves forward, the muscles in the neck and shoulders must work much harder to support it.

Over time this forward-head posture places chronic tension on the cervical spine and reduces mobility in the upper back, creating tightness that spreads across the neck and shoulders.

Stress & Tension Holding

The neck and shoulders are one of the most common places people physically hold stress.

When someone feels under pressure or fatigued, the body naturally curls forward and the shoulders elevate. That posture tightens the surrounding muscles and can lead to persistent tension, headaches and reduced movement through the neck.

Sleep-Related Neck Pain

Sleep position can also contribute to ongoing neck discomfort.

Sleeping on the stomach or using pillows that push the head too far forward or sideways can leave the neck compressed for hours at a time. Over weeks or months this can lead to stiffness, muscle guarding, and restricted movement.

Injury, Whiplash & Long-Term Impacts

Previous injuries - including car accidents, falls, or sports impacts - can continue to affect the neck long after the initial event.

Even injuries that happened years ago can leave lingering stiffness, muscular imbalance, or joint restriction that contributes to ongoing pain if not properly addressed.

Nerve-Related Pain & Headaches

In some cases, neck pain is linked to nerve irritation or compression.

This can lead to symptoms such as:

Tingling or pins and needles in the arms or hands
Numbness or weakness
Radiating pain into the shoulders or upper back
Headaches that start at the base of the skull

Tight neck muscles, jaw tension, and reduced mobility in the cervical spine can all contribute to these symptoms.

How We Treat Neck Pain

Effective neck pain treatment focuses on restoring movement, reducing muscular tension, and improving the way the neck, shoulders and upper back work together.

Osteopathy for Neck Pain

Osteopathy plays a key role in improving cervical spine mobility and reducing pressure within the joints.

Using gentle articulation, mobilisation techniques, and - where appropriate - manipulation or traction, we help restore natural movement through the neck and upper spine. When the joints move more freely, surrounding muscles can relax and pain often settles quickly.

Massage & Manual Therapy

Sports massage and deep tissue massage are highly effective for releasing the muscular tension that builds across the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

By improving blood flow and reducing muscle guarding, massage helps restore normal movement and relieve the constant tightness many people experience from desk work and stress.

Home Stretches & Self-Care

Simple daily movements can make a huge difference in managing neck tension.

We guide clients through accessible stretches and mobility exercises that can be performed at a desk, at home, or during short breaks throughout the day. Even a few minutes of gentle movement can help reduce stiffness and improve posture.

Neck Strengthening & Postural Support

Long-term relief from neck pain often comes from strengthening the muscles that support healthy posture.

Exercises such as chin tucks, band work, and muscle energy techniques help retrain the neck and upper back so they can support the head more efficiently, reducing strain during daily activities.

Jaw & TMJ Support

Neck pain is frequently linked with jaw tension and TMJ dysfunction.

For clients experiencing headaches, jaw discomfort or clenching, we assess how the jaw, neck, and shoulders interact and use targeted treatment to reduce tension across the whole area.
Neck Pain Won’t Get Better by Itself

Necks are adaptable, but adaptation isn’t healing. Whether your pain started at your desk, from long hours on your phone, during training, or seemingly out of nowhere, there is usually a clear mechanical reason behind it.

With the right combination of osteopathy, sports massage and structured rehab, you can restore mobility, reduce tension and feel more comfortable in everyday movement again.

You don’t have to keep stretching it every morning just to get through the day.
You don’t have to live with constant tightness in your shoulders.
You don’t have to accept headaches or stiffness as ‘normal.’

The main benefits of a sports massage are that it can treat, maintain, and prevent the following conditions and syndromes:

Sports related injuries
Runner’s knee
Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow
Sciatica and related back pain
Frozen shoulder
Repetitive strains and injuries

Not all of those are sports-related, despite the name.

Golfers and Tennis Elbow can affect non-golfers and tennis players quite frequently, for example. Sitting at an uncomfortable desk and typing can cause Repetitive Strain Injuries just as easily as manual labour or exercise.
