Shoulder Pain Treatment
Rotator cuff injuries, tight shoulders and everyday pain treated by experts.
Shoulder pain can impact every aspect of life.
Reaching for your coffee. Taking off a jumper. Lifting weights. Sleeping on your side. Even ‘just’ sitting at your desk.
It’s one of the most frustrating and limiting issues our clients bring to us at Fire & Earth – partly because the shoulder is such a complex joint and partly because so many people ignore it until it becomes impossible to ignore.
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and that mobility comes at a cost. It’s a shallow joint by design, relying heavily on muscles and soft tissues for stability rather than deep structural support. In fact, there are 17 muscles attaching into the shoulder complex. That’s a lot of moving parts that need to work together.
When even a few of those muscles stop doing their job properly, everything else starts compensating. Bigger muscles overwork. Smaller stabilisers switch off. Pain and stiffness build gradually.
Many people live with undiagnosed shoulder pain for years. They adapt. They avoid certain movements. They change how they train. They stop reaching overhead. They sleep differently.
But shoulder pain doesn’t fix itself.
At Fire & Earth, we specialise in shoulder pain treatment that focuses on restoring proper movement, rebuilding stability and reducing irritation at the source. Whether you’re dealing with rotator cuff pain, posture-related shoulder issues, gym injury therapy needs, or long-term stiffness, we treat the root cause — not just the symptoms.
If your shoulder has been bothering you for more than a few days, it’s worth getting it assessed properly.
Common Symptoms of Shoulder Dysfunction
Shoulder pain can be a bit insidious – building over time rather than roaring into the body.
You might notice:
Sharp pain when lifting the arm
Limited range of motion
Clicking, grinding or catching in the joint
Weakness when pressing or pulling
Pain when reaching overhead or behind your back
Discomfort lying on that side at night
Night pain is particularly common in deeper shoulder dysfunction and rotator cuff irritation.
Because the shoulder is so mobile, it’s also inherently unstable. When the smaller stabilising muscles stop working efficiently, the larger ‘mover’ muscles - like the deltoids and upper traps - take over. Over time, this creates imbalance, overload and pain.
What Causes Shoulder Pain?
There isn’t one single cause. Shoulder pain usually develops from a combination of poor mechanics, overload and compensation.
We commonly treat.
Rotator Cuff Injuries & Irritation
Rotator cuff injuries are the most common source of shoulder pain.
The rotator cuff is a group of four small but vital muscles that stabilise the shoulder joint. One of the most commonly irritated is the supraspinatus, which handles the first 10 degrees of lifting your arm out to the side.
If it becomes overloaded or inhibited, other muscles step in to compensate. That compensation leads to fatigue, tension and progressive irritation.
Rotator cuff pain treatment rarely needs complete rest. Recovery starts with restoring control and strength to those small stabilising muscles so the shoulder can function properly again.
Left untreated, minor irritation can develop into persistent tendinopathy or even tearing.
Shoulder Instability & Posture-Related Shoulder Issues
Modern life isn’t kind to shoulders.
Hours at a desk. Driving. Phones. Forward head posture. Rounded shoulders.
When the shoulders sit in a protracted (rolled forward) position for long periods, the stabilising muscles weaken. The joint becomes less supported. People then go into the gym and start lifting from that already compromised position.
This is where we see posture-related shoulder issues develop, especially in people who train hard but don’t address mobility or control first.
Muscle imbalances between the big movers (traps, delts, pecs) and the stabilisers (rotator cuff, lower traps, serratus anterior) are a major driver of ongoing pain.
Shoulder mobility therapy is essential here. Not just stretching but restoring balanced mechanics.
Repetitive Strain & Overhead Work
We treat a lot of shoulder injury therapy cases in:
Tennis and swimming athletes
Combat sports practitioners
Tradespeople - particularly plumbers, carpenters, painters
PTs and gym enthusiasts
Repetitive overhead movement places significant load through the AC joint, rotator cuff and surrounding structures. Over time, without adequate recovery and strength balance, irritation builds.
Repetitive drilling, sawing, lifting, pressing - it all adds up.
Joint Conditions & Mechanical Issues
Not all shoulder pain is muscular.
We also treat:
AC joint irritation
Subacromial bursitis
Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)
Mechanical restriction within the joint
These conditions often present with:
Night pain
Restricted external rotation
Radiating discomfort into the arm or neck
A feeling of stiffness that doesn’t improve with stretching
With the right shoulder pain treatment plan, these issues are manageable and often highly responsive to manual therapy combined with rehab.
How We Treat Shoulder Pain at Fire & Earth
Shoulder pain treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all. The shoulder is complex, and effective treatment depends on understanding exactly what isn’t working - whether that’s joint restriction, muscular imbalance, tendon overload or postural dysfunction.
At Fire & Earth, we assess the whole shoulder complex before deciding on the right approach. That includes how the joint moves, how the muscles activate, and how your posture or training habits may be contributing.
Sports Therapy for Shoulder Pain
Our sports therapy sessions begin with a full shoulder movement assessment. We look at range, control, strength and how your shoulder behaves under load.
From there, we build a targeted rehab plan designed to:
Restore shoulder mobility
Strengthen the rotator cuff
Correct muscle imbalances
Improve stability under movement
Rotator cuff pain treatment is rarely about heavy weights. In fact, it’s often the opposite.
We use resistance band work, 1kg dumbbell lifts, and controlled strengthening drills to re-engage the small stabilising muscles that protect the joint. It’s the small movements (not the ego lifts) that rebuild real strength.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is particularly effective for sports massage for shoulder pain when tension has built up in the surrounding muscles.
We commonly release:
Rotator cuff muscles
Deltoids
Upper trapezius
Pectorals
Posterior shoulder capsule
When the shoulder is irritated, larger muscles often overwork to compensate. Releasing that tension helps reduce strain on the joint and improves overall movement quality.
Massage creates the conditions for better movement and more effective rehab.
Osteopathy
Osteopathy plays a key role in shoulder injury therapy, especially when joint mechanics are restricted.
Through gentle joint mobilisation, articulation and - where appropriate - manipulation or traction techniques, we improve how the shoulder moves within its natural range.
When joint movement improves, overloaded tissues can finally settle.
Osteopathy is particularly helpful for:
AC joint irritation
Frozen shoulder
Chronic stiffness
Posture-related shoulder issues
Recurrent shoulder instability
Improving mechanics means the muscles don’t have to fight against restriction.
Soft Tissue Release (STR)
Soft Tissue Release (STR) is a highly targeted technique used to break down adhesions and improve muscle function.
It combines pressure with active movement, allowing us to:
Reduce scar tissue restriction
Improve tissue glide
Restore muscular efficiency
Support long-term shoulder stiffness relief
STR is especially effective in chronic rotator cuff irritation and repetitive strain cases where tissue quality has changed over time.
Rehab & Home Exercises
Lasting shoulder mobility therapy doesn’t stop in the clinic.
We guide you through simple, effective exercises to reinforce the work we do hands-on. These may include:
Band external and internal rotations
Light lateral raises
Muscle Energy Techniques (METs)
‘Around the world’ mobility drills
People often get bored and jump back into heavy pressing too quickly. But shoulder strength is rebuilt through controlled, low-load consistency.
When the small intrinsic muscles do their job properly, everything else falls back into balance.
When to Seek Help
Don’t wait months hoping it will settle.
You should book an assessment if you experience:
Pain that prevents normal daily movement
Shoulder pain at night
Noticeable weakness in the arm
Limited mobility lasting more than 7 days
Pain worsening during workouts
Clicking or instability that feels progressive
The earlier we assess it, the easier it is to correct.

Shoulder Pain Doesn’t Fix Itself
Shoulders are incredibly adaptable which is why people compensate for so long. But adaptation isn’t healing.
Whether your pain started in the gym, at your desk, on a job site, or seemingly out of nowhere, there is usually a clear mechanical explanation.
With the right shoulder mobility therapy, hands-on treatment and structured rehab, you can restore strength, control and confidence in your movement.
You don’t have to train around it.
You don’t have to sleep badly.
You don’t have to ‘just manage it.’
We’re here to help you fix it properly.
The main benefits of a sports massage are that it can treat, maintain, and prevent the following conditions and syndromes:
Sports related injuries
Runner’s knee
Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow
Sciatica and related back pain
Frozen shoulder
Repetitive strains and injuries
Not all of those are sports-related, despite the name.
Golfers and Tennis Elbow can affect non-golfers and tennis players quite frequently, for example. Sitting at an uncomfortable desk and typing can cause Repetitive Strain Injuries just as easily as manual labour or exercise.
